DLT registration for Indian business SMS

To send application-to-person (A2P) SMS in India, your business must be registered on the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform that TRAI's regulations require: the entity first, then the headers (sender IDs) and message templates you will use. sms-ocean builds DLT verification into onboarding, so the registration step is completed with our guidance before your first verified send.

Why DLT comes first

Commercial SMS to Indian mobile numbers is regulated. TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) framework requires businesses that send application-to-person messages to be registered on the DLT platform run by telecom operators. Traffic that is not registered — an unregistered entity, header or template — is not eligible to route to Indian recipients.

That is why DLT is step two of sms-ocean onboarding, between creating your account and your first verified send. It is not optional paperwork bolted on later; the homepage states it plainly: entity, sender ID and template verification are built into onboarding because they are mandatory under TRAI regulations for SMS in India.

What gets registered

The exact screens, forms and fees belong to the DLT platform you register on; they are operated by the telecom ecosystem, not by sms-ocean. Regulatory details also evolve, so confirm current requirements on your DLT platform rather than relying on any second-hand summary — including this one.

  • Entity — your business itself, registered once on the DLT platform under its legal name and registration details.
  • Headers (sender IDs) — the sender names recipients see. Transactional-style traffic uses alphabetic headers; promotional traffic uses the numeric header series the DLT platform assigns. Headers must be registered and approved before use.
  • Templates — the approved message content, with variables declared where data such as an order id or OTP is inserted at send time. Templates are registered per use and approved on DLT before traffic using them can route.

How sms-ocean onboarding covers it

Onboarding is a guided sequence, and where a step is managed by our team rather than self-serve, the signup flow says so. In practice:

  1. Create your sms-ocean accountStart with the standard signup path; your account is the workspace for everything that follows.
  2. Complete your DLT verificationThis step is mandatory. Entity, sender ID and template verification are handled with our guidance — the admin portal's DLT approvals page tracks where each approval stands.
  3. First verified sendSend to a verified number, confirm the delivery status arrives, then move to production routing.
VERIFIED — portal capture · DLT approvals. The verification step of onboarding is a real workflow, not a marketing claim.

What to have ready

The DLT platform registers your business under its legal identity, so onboarding goes fastest when the details you provide during signup match your business registration. Have on hand: the entity name and registration details as they appear on official records, and a contact who can approve headers and template content on the business's behalf.

If your organisation already holds DLT registrations from a previous provider, say so during signup — existing entity and header registrations may be reusable, and duplicating an entity creates rework.

Common causes of DLT rework

None of these are fatal; they cost a re-approval cycle. They are also the reason the verification step is guided rather than a bare form — catch them before submission, not after.

  • Name mismatches — the entity name on DLT differing from the business name given during signup.
  • Templates written as final copy when they should declare variables — placeholders such as an OTP or order id must be declared in the template, not hard-coded.
  • Header and template mismatches — a template registered against a header you do not actually send with, or content that drifts from the approved template at send time.
  • Content category errors — transactional-style copy submitted under a promotional header or the other way round.

What it costs

DLT platforms may charge their own registration fees for entity, header and template entries; confirm those directly on the platform you register with, because they are separate from messaging charges. sms-ocean's pack rates are published on the pricing section of this site, and the final terms applicable to you are confirmed during signup.

Frequently asked questions

Is DLT registration required for OTP messages too?
Yes. Transactional and OTP traffic to Indian numbers is part of the same regulated framework — the entity, the alphabetic header and the OTP template must be registered and approved before that traffic routes.
I already registered on DLT with another provider. Do I start over?
Usually not. DLT registrations belong to your business, not to a provider. Tell us during signup what you already hold, and onboarding will work from that instead of duplicating entries.
How long does DLT verification take?
Approval times are set by the DLT platform and the accuracy of what is submitted, so they vary. Guided submission avoids the common rework causes listed above, which is usually what determines whether it is one cycle or several.
